Thanks to Salila Expeditions our teachers house now has 2 new beds!!!

Delivering Donations

We continue to make progress on the new teacher's house at Kukusan Village.

This week we have been taking donations of household goods.

It's starting to look more homey...

I'm also pleased to report that outside on the Terrace a lovely breeze comes through and the inside of the house is cool despite the stifling heat here right now.

I think we did good, you guys.

Signing over Rumah Guru

The paperwork is signed and they keys have been officially handed over...

There are still a few finishing touches to do, and we need to get all the household goods together to really set the teacher up, but we are nearly there!!!

Rumah Guru: The (Almost) Finished Product

Check it, double deck it, we are DONE!!!

Well... almost...

The building is complete - we even have a bathroom.

Aside from a few bits and pieces - like sealing the wood and moving the solar panel and securing the house from termites we have a brand new house ready for the teacher to move into!!!

Plans are in motion to get the team back for a day for all the finishing touches and then it's just a matter of filling the house with all the necessities.  

Hopefully by the end of the month we will have handed over the keys.

I think everyone - including myself - is (happily) surprised that this actually happened.

Rumah Guru: Construction Update

The carpenters estimate 10 more days until this house is ready...

TEN DAYS!!!

I'm beside myself...

I leave the island on Friday for 5 weeks...  I'm a bit sad to be going before the house is ready but LOVE the fact that it will be all done when I get back!

Rumah Guru - Construction Update

Last week was a most exciting week for our teachers house - we started the build ON SITE.  This means that the villagers can SEE progress.  Prior to this week nothing was overly visible to them - or to you - the raising of the money, the getting necessary permissions and support, securing workers, ordering materials.  But this week, oh, it's visible, and it's all happening rather quickly now... 

We are not all talk anymore!

Monday July 10, first thing in the morning the materials and pre built frames were loaded onto a raft to tow to Kukusan Village where we are building the house...

At the other end the unloading of materials was decidedly more "full on" as everything had to be carried up a gazillion stairs to the building site.  Luckily we had lots of eager helpers!

July 12,  we took cement over to Kukusan for the house's foundations and saw that the framework was already going up...  It feels like things are really moving...

July 13, the foundations are poured.

The carpenters will break for the weekend now, but I look forward to bringing you more updates of the build next week!!!
