OCEAN WARRIORS BEACH SCHOOL: THE TURTLE AND THE PLASTIC BAG

This week our grade 6's performed a puppet show from the story "The Turtle and the Plastic Bag".  We reviewed some material about plastics in our oceans, and reviewed the story that we had read to the students during another beach school lesson.  Then the grade 6's practiced the story's dialogue while the younger classes made puppets from the characters in the story.

Ocean Warriors Beach School: Sorting Our Waste

This week our Ocean Warriors Beach School had us sorting our rubbish!  We took a 3 coloured bin to Selpele village to teach the kids how to separate paper, plastic and cardboard.  And, of course, we did a beach clean!

Ocean Warriors Beach School: Tolak Tas Kresek

This weeks Ocean Warriors Beach school was all about saying NO to plastic bags.

We taught the kids a song "Tolak Tas Kresek", and shared a story about a turtle who ate a plastic bag thinking it was a jelly fish.

The 100BOOKS project donated origami paper for the kids to make puppets of the characters from the story.

Ocean Warriors Beach School : Micro Plastics in Our Food Chain

Following up from our screening of Pulau Plastik we worked with the students in Selpele Village to make posters of "Micro Plastics in our Food Chain".

We were able to donate poster paper, origami paper and coloured pencils for the children to work with. 

We made origami fish that ate micro plastics picked up from the beach during our beach cleans.

Ocean Warriors Beach School: Pulau Plastik

In collaboration with Atlas Pearls and Green Books we screened the film “Pulau Plastik” as part of our Ocean Warriors Beach School program in Selpele Village.  

There is no electricity at the village during the day so we were unable to use a projector to show the film, and with just a couple of laptops we weren't sure how we were going to go but the kids gathered around and it was an absolute success.

After the film we all chipped in for a beach clean in the village.

Pulau Plastik was a great resource for the children and we are looking forward to engaging the school students in some follow up activities about micro-plastics and other marine litter.
